Dechra Zycortal Suspension is indicated for as a replacement therapy for mineralocorticoid deficiency in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's Disease).
Addison's Disease (primary hypoadrenocorticism) is a condition in which the adrenal glands are producing lower than normal levels of glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids (aldosterone). Sometimes the adrenal glands fail to produce these hormones all together, which can be life-threatening when levels become very low. Damaged adrenal glands can be a result of a number of things: hereditary, auto-immune disease, tumors, injury, prescription drug side effects, infection or inflammation. These hormones are vital for a body to function normally.
Zycortal Suspension is a long-term medication which replaces the missing aldosterone, the hormone responsible for maintaining hydration and blood pressure. There is no cure for Addison's Disease but treatment with Zycotal Suspension will help to manage the symptoms. Dogs with this disease will have to be treated for the rest of its life.
