Lactulose Solution, USP has a laxative effect in the colon, softening the stool and relieving constipation. Lactulose is also given for the treatment of liver disease and hepatic encephalopathy. It decreases blood ammonia concentrations by lowering colon pH and reducing absorption of ammonia from the colon.

Lactulose is a syrup of synthetic sugar that combines fructose and galactose. This passes through the digestive tract without being absorbed, but instead is broken down by bacteria making the intestinal contents more acidic. These acids pull water into the colon thereby softening the stool. The acids also convert ammonia in the colon into ammonium, which is then passed out in the stool.
Each tablespoon (15 ml) contains: 10 g lactulose.
Dosage and Administration:
Dog and Cats: 1 ml per 2 lbs body weight every 8 hours initially, then given as needed. Notify your veterinarian if excessive diarrhea develops.
Caution:
Use with caution in diabetic animals because it contains the sugars lactose and galactose.
Side Effects:
Possible side effects include flatulence, bloated stomach and stomach cramping. Symptoms of overdose would include diarrhea and dehydration.
