Pilocarpine Ophthalmic Solutionis a miotic medication used in the treatment of canine primary glaucoma by constricting the pupils and thereby helping control intraocular pressure. Although Pilocarpine is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine, it is a commonly accepted practice to use this medication in dogs.
Dosage and Administration: The usual dose in dogs is one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day.
Pilocarpine is also given in moderate doses (approximately 2 mg) to induce emesis (vomiting) in cats who have ingested foreign plants, foods, or drugs.
Adverse Reactions: Pilocarpine can cause local irritation when first used. Pilocarpine may cause systemic effects including vomiting, diarrhea and increased salivation.
